AMAG: ASI Certified

AMAG: ASI Certified

In September 2018, AMAG became the first integrated location worldwide with a foundry and rolling mill under one roof to be certified according to the ASI Performance Standard, one of the highest industry standards for the responsible production and procurement of aluminium as well as related product responsibility.

This officially confirms the sustainable production and processing of aluminium at Ranshofen, a status from which AMAG customers also benefit: this gives them the security that, with AMAG, they have a supplier that takes sustainability issues seriously.

Dr. Helmut Kaufmann, Chief Operating Officer at AMAG Austria Metall AG, expresses his pleasure: "Our long-term aim is to have enthusiastic customers for our innovative and ecologically valuable products. With this certification, we provide proof of both sustainable and responsible production and processing of aluminium in the areas of the environment, governance and society, and we confirm again that we are consistent in pursuing the AMAG principle of 'Adding value through commitment'."

AMAG is already a founding member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which was formed in 2012 to create sustainable standards along the entire aluminium value chain – from responsible corporate governance through meeting high environmental and societal standards. Eleven sustainability aspects are brought to bear as part of the certification: business integrity, policy and management, transparency, material stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions, emissions, effluents and waste, water, biodiversity, human rights, labour rights and occupational health & safety.

The certification pays particular tribute to the strategic focus at AMAG on aluminium recycling, as this requires just 5% of the energy needed for primary metal production. Aluminium scrap represents the most important input material at the Ranshofen site in volume terms. The company processed around 350,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap in the 2017 financial year. The high scrap utilisation rate of more than 75% and the consistent separation of aluminium scrap promotes the sustainable and responsible production and processing of aluminium products. The main reasons for this extraordinarily high recycling proportion on a sector comparison include AMAG employees' many years of recycling expertise, ongoing investments in state-of-the-art sorting, processing and smelter technologies, and the high alloy diversity at the integrated site in Ranshofen.
